Now really with the new future of gaming just around the corner..
It is worth the $660 for the GTX compared to $490 for the GTS...?
How long would it be until i would actually need the extra power the GTX has to offer?

The performance ratios are exactly in-line with their pricing ratios. You can see this from their specs. The GTX has 33% more Stream Processors running 75MHz faster. It also has about 33% more RAM bandwidth with 20% more RAM. The main GPU core is also ever so slightly faster at +12.5%. All in all, the 33% price increase of the GTX vs GTS is perfectly justified by the specs alone.
In real world performance, the GTX wipes the floor with just about everything! Aside from that, however, the GTS is a good "wise" upgrade with some nice performance boosts in DX9-class games. Plus it's a cheap investment (relatively speaking :p) in D3D/DX10. Either one is well worth their price.
If I had the opportunity myself, I'd definitely save up for the GTX! It trumps any other DX9 vid card and even edges out high end SLI/CrossFire set-ups in many cases. Plus it's fully prepared to run Crysis in all its Vista-age glory. The GTS is a good sensible choice, but the GTX is difficult to ignore as the undisputed god of current vid cards and future gaming. It will be dethroned eventually (probably in the next 6-9 months) but it's nevertheless an excellent investment and ahead of its time.
