Much more information about your system (esp what hard drives, partition, formats and op system) and what you have done so far to recover stuff. GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org) is often a good starting point for DIY recovery.

If the data is vital then dont even boot it up but slave it to another pc and run any recovery stuff from there or from a live CD. Avoid scandisk/chkdsk/defrag - indeed anything that may write to the drive.

When you have got your data back you may need to repair or reinstall your operating system - but which one is it?

Thanks Paul for responding. All I can tell you is,my computer is Windows 2000,C hard drive. When I turn the computer on it says "ipwins.exe unadle to locate dll. Dynamic link library MSVCR71.dll could not be found in specified path C:\programfiles\ipwins;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT\ system;C:\WINN\system32\os2\dll Also,cproc.exe-unable to locate dll MSCOREE.dll could not be found in specified path C:\WINNT\system32\crunner;c:\WINNT\system32;C:\WIN NT\system:C\WINNT;C:\WINN\system32\os2\dll Then it says Project1 runtime error 76 Path not found And my computer is offline for some reason.I have not been able to get it back on.Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated

A repair installation (you will need the Win2K installation CD) should get the system running again but it the data is vital dont do this until you have recovered the data using another PC.

As Paul said, you should get the computer with a (repair) installation back running. To save your data, you should put the HDD in another computer. Install on that computer first recovery software: Digital Image Recovery (Freeware), PC Inspector smart recovery (Freeware) or PhotoRescue (Shareware).
