View Full Version : Problems with powerup with new motherboard

I put a new motherboard, a Biostar M7VIB-A AMD - 1A/5PCI - 4 DDR, Sound, VIA KT266A in a 250 Watt ATX case (which worked fine on another system) and a 800 mhz AMD Duron processor. When I switch on the system (I have checked for shorts, jumpers etc. for problems) the fans etc turn for less than a second and then nothing. The LED power light stays on but no juice to the system. The first time I powered up it started for 5 seconds but now it is less than a second. Any help? The motherboard manuals says the on off switch must power on for 50ns to tell the powersupply to powerup.

I don't know what to do? Your help would be appreciated.

make sure the voltage slider is is set to correct level(U.S.)
did you try the board out of the case and install everything one at a time to see where it stops.(Recomended before installing it and the hrwdware in the case)specifically for this reason. You may not have enough juice to fire it up with a 250w power supply??

I did try the board out of the case with nothing but the video card, still nothing. The power goes on for less than a second and then dead. I ran another board fine with this same Power Supply so??

Any other ideas?

I know this i know this!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Well hopefully i know it. Well first thing is put the cmos jumper on the other pins.
Next with the Biostars you have to push the RAM in a little bit harder , try that and post back.
Hope you fix it.

The power supply is "tripping" itself.

Can be caused by a short or more probable, the PSU +3.3V and
+5V legs aren't strong enough on the 250W unit.

Luck.

Tried changing the CMOS jumpers, no power at all. Pushed in the RAM, no change. Removed board from case, no change.

Will a more powerful power supply do the trick?

Feedback appreciated.

Thanks

that would be my next plan, do you know someone that has a 300w laying around maybe you could try it before you invest in one?

I called the computer supply house and they are going to loan me a 320 Watt powersupply to test our theory, but they thought it was a bad motherboard. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Final update: Tech support for the computer supply house tested the board and found the AMD Duron 800 cpu was faulty. They recommended to go to the 1000 mghz cpu. They tested it and gave it back with the chip installed and presto I have my new computer working. It was not the power supply at all, a faulty cpu. Thanks
