O.K., If I purchase a copy of media center os from newegg I also recieve a upgrade coupon for vista. Looking at the vista site, for the coupon to be valid the mce os must come installed on a retail pc. You guys got any idea how self builders are gonna be treated by ms when it comes to this free upgrade? I am gonna use vista on my first build, but I would like to save some money. Plus, I'll feel more comfortable on an os I'm used to when I do a first install.

well as far as that coupon goes... didn't you just say it had to be installed on a retail pc to be valid? that's not much good for a do-it-yourselfer.

Is the MCE a retail copy or OEM?
You are the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of a retail PC, and if you installed Windows MCE 2005 OEM on the PC when you built it, Windows MCE 2005 OEM is considered to have come pre-installed on a retail PC.
Where in the MS EULA for Windows MCE 2005 does it say that the OEM of a retail PC must be a large computer manufacturer like Dell, HP, or Gateway.

Well in either case it seems like a good risk. I'm not a real adventurous type, so I was gonna wait for you guys here, and other forums, to run thru vista before I made my move to upgrade anyway. Maybe the consensus will be, vista is not worth the hassle.
