Just want a survey of sorts. I for some reason grew into this computer stuff with the notion that Micron was king. Sort of like Chevy versus Ford versus Dodge you know. Well, I was curious as to other peoples preference as to memory. Is there indeed a stand out company, that makes an awesome reliable product, and also is there those that we should stay far away from?

Yes Micron is one of the best. SOme others are kingston, mushkin. I really hadnt ran in to bad RAm at least i didnt know it because its hard to troubleshoot bad ram. I would stay away from the generics, however never had bad generic. I guess a rule of thumb is if you game , get the best RAM.

Like the top 3 auto makes you will find those that swear by their Ram supplier.
I use Crucial for everything.
I have never had a bad stick from them.
From the 30 pin ram of many years ago to the 184 pin sdram I use today

I agree with the above post.
Stay away from no name Generic stuff.
Memory is one of the Area you need to get what you pay for.
So spend the little extra

I agree with Rick. At crucial you enter the details of your Mobo and they will sell you mem that has been tried and test to that specific board.

Sorry, but I must disagree here. What if your are looking for RDRAM! I don't want to debate the pros and cons of this memory except to say that www.crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com) doesn't sell RDRAM.

I think I will amend my first question. I was wanting to know of good names or manufacturers to look into, and others to stay away from. I already use Micron, and I am learning that crucial is a division of such. AS FAR AS Rambus is concerned I am not a part of the Intel monopoly and brainwashing scheme. I am a loyal fan of AMD. So I too won't debate the pros and cons of specific memory design, that is for a later forum.

Crucial is a subsidary of Micron; so-Micron is one of the best memory maker's i've used. But Kingston has also provided good memory over the years, so has Mushkin, and I like Corsair.

Probably the best { most reliable } i've ever seen is Nanya-they used to make only memory for server's, but now you can get standard desktop components from them. I use Nanya DDR in my main gamer, and Kingston/Crucial { Micron } in my home server and other various PC's.

Once i tried some " generic " RAM from a PC fairground show-biggest waste of money i've ever spent. Caused so many lockup's/crashes i decided to slag it with a torch just to let it know there were no hard feelings http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks iisbob, your answer is exactly what I was looking for. I have seen some nanya advertised for some really reasonable prices at pricewatch, but I had never heard anything about them. So consequently I was a little suspicious. Basically that is why I wanted the information was so I could price shop. I looked at the crucial website and wasn't impressed with their prices at all.

Micron and Mushkin are prolly some of the best out there, in the days of "over-clocking" Celeron's the High end Mushkin stuff was always the best, but seriously.. anything you can pick up at a computer show / swap meet will do the trick http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hippy,

The family just finished watching the Michael Cain/Steve Martin movie "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" for the umpteenth time the other night.

Your comment, in light of iisbob's comments on the downside of going with generic/swap meet RAM, provided me with the visual of Martin when he's taken on the persona of Ruprecht. After a marvelous "Really..." in response to Cain, he proceeds to amble indignantly over to the fireplace mantle and there, proceeds to begin meticulously tipping the vases to their peril on the floor! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Iisbob's a 20 year or so IT vet...

Ive personally had conversations with ASUS Tech-support folks and the vast majority of owner problems with their boards can be traced to bad RAM. They specifically recommend Muskin...but I've never heard anyone complain on the PC Guide Forums regarding ASUS with Crucial. If I remember, Mushkin was not cheap either!

Bottom Line: As in most things...you get what you pay for! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Then again, who knows...you could get lucky! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

My experiance with the "generic" stuff has been pretty good so far...1 stick of PNY (not the best but not the worst either) and one stick of Micron (one was a freebie from some place with an order type deal; overstock clearence the other bought). But I really think that it is a lottery, you take your chances with it, could just be a bunch of overstock or it could be the dregs of a production run. If you order the "good stuff" then you always know what you are getting, plus places like Crucial and Mushikin have a name and reputation to uphold so you also get a warranty.
