laptop power

Hello. My laptop worked "fine" until Saturday morning. I went to turn it on and it started to power up then popped and went out. I tried several more times and then moved the laptop to another location. Sometimes it will stay on long enough to get to the desktop screen (the fans will come on then something will pop) but then go out a few seconds later. It doesn't even stay on for 5 minutes. Can anyone help? I chatted with Compaq and they really weren't much help.

Define 'pop'

My thoughts are a thermal overload is causing a hard shutdown but I have no idea of age and condition of your laptop.

Please post the specs, model, age, etc.
