I have a PII-433 and I am planning a MOBO/processor/graphics card upgrade.
I don't play games, but want to be able to record from the TV with good quality recordings and playback.
What speed processor do I need, and what would be a suitable graphics card?
Thanks for any advice.

Anything above 700mhz should be fine for tv capture, you can do it with slower systems, but I've found frame skips and choppy sound below that...the faster the better http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
The ATI all-in wonder cards are a good choice....the best one is the 8500, but if you're not gaming, the 7500 aiw or just plain radeon aiw with 32mb of ram would be ok...
System RAM is very important as well, I would recommend at least 512mb, again, the more the better and a fast hard drive (7200 rpm ata100) is helpful...

That depends on the OS being used. Win98 does not get along with more than 512MB, others such as win2000 or XP should work quite well. I don't have the link to the info about this issue handy, maybe mjc wil see this one and post it. MS finally admitted win98 has a problem with more than 512MB RAM. Theoretically it can handle much more, (4GB I think) but in practice, 512MB is all it will cooperate with, and usually that's plenty.

Thankyou.
Does anyone have this sort of setup, and can I expect full screen DVD quality playback? or am I asking too much here.
Or is a better option to burn the recordings to a CDR and playback on a DVD player?
Many thanks

Good call Pete...there is a knowledge base article that explains the problem.
You should be able to record fullscreen (720 X 480) at the same screen size as a DVD, but since TV isn't DVD quality, it won't look like a dvd.
In order to play it back on a dvd player you'll have to convert it to a VCD, which will allow most DVD players to play it and gives you 30-45 minutes per cd...
