I currently have a HP NX6125 Laptop with a AMD Turion 64 ML34 1.8GHz processor and 512MB of RAM.

I want to upgrade the RAM.

From the spec sheet:

RAM 512 MB (installed) / 2 GB (max) - DDR SDRAM - 333 MHz - PC2700

This is,I think, a single module, and I know there's a spare slot.

SO can people tell me: Can I buy any 333mhz pc2700 memory module to go in the other slot? Regardless of size, and manufacturer?

Also, is this something I could do myself or is it a job for professionals?

I'm not sure whether to go for another 512mb or get a 1gb, but I'm worried I may need to buy 2 1gbs if I want to go any higher because I read somewhere everything had to be done in matching pairs.

Thanks for any help...

I recommend going to Crucial's site and see what their tools show you can be added to your laptop.
www.crucial.com

You can get the particulars there and compare with other vendors on price, but they do guarantee compatibility and quality on theirs.

Notebook memory is different in form factor from desktops.

Most users can add memory to their PCs, the Crucial site even has instructions on how to do this. Most, not all, laptops have a small cover on the bottom that you remove to get to the memory chips. Some require you to remove the keyboard.

DO be aware you have to be careful with static charges when messing with memory modules.

Here is what they say about your HP:

Awesome reply. Thanks for that info. Much appreciated. They don't seem to mention any need for matched pairs which suggests I could just buy one 1gb module...

Not sure if I understand you.

I've got 1 module of 512 mb in one of two memory slots. I wasn't sure whether, if I wanted to upgrade and use the other slot, the size of both memory modules had to be the same, or whether I could put 1 GB in the unused slot and leave the current 512 where it is.

Since you don't have dual channel ram you can put in any size module (up to 1GB) you like. They don't have to match. So if you want you can add a 1GB stick with no problem.

If it is easily accessible, I would recommend putting the larger 1GB stick in the first slot where the current 512MB stick is and moving the 512 over to slot 2.

When the first stick is filled with data there is a performance hit when the system switches to the second stick. So by putting the largest stick in the first slot it takes much longer to fill up, thereby taking a performance hit less often.

Here are the instructions for adding memory to your HP/Compaq NX6125 laptop (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00392150&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN).

I think that once you get the memory cover off you will find 2 256MB SODIMMs insted of 1 512MB SODIMM

jlreich and rond36. Thanks so much for that info. That is exactly what I was after. rond36, I can't remember why I thought the machine would have a single module in there, but I suspect your guess is more likely to be correct. Best way to find out is to get the (non-metallic!) screw-driver out...

Thanks again. Top information.
