I've been looking for a retailer with this card in stock..both on line and in town..I'm hearing from several of them (I called the online stores) that the GF3 Ti500 didnt make the QC cut and has been discontinued...some going as far to say they dont expect tech spt down the road for current owners...I've been told the GF3 standard chipset is a better buy/performer than the Ti200 is...looking at the specs it makes sense...

SO how many of you have heard this? Should I settle for the GF3? No ATI please http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif and I don't think I need the GF4..plus the $$ and the wait are not worth it...I know iisbob has got the Ti500 model...just things that make you wonder....????

Thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

HorseHockey! Whom ever told you that pack of lies should be shot! ( they work at that awful BestBuy don't they !? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif )

Yes, i have Both, a Ti200 & a Ti500, to be honest i don't see a whole lot of performance diff in them. The Ti500 is in my main system, and the Ti200 is in another T-bird system i have a a test bed for game demo's, etc.. and it runs just a nice as the Ti500 as far as i can tell.

Go for the Ti200-it costs about $150 less, and provides just as good performance. I prefer the PNY model myself.

As for the G4, ah well-guess soon i'll have to break out the wallet agin for my annual 6 month upgrade http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Hi bassvax,
Funny you should mention that. I've got a elsa gf2 which I was hoping to upgrade to there ti500. Every time I look in on the site where I buy most bits, It says expect a long lead time. I looked in at the weekend to find that they still have a load of ti200 and the ti500 have been removed from the list strange.Any way I hav'nt got the folding at the moment so may be gf4 is the way to go later this year.

Sorry, iisbob, but I know better than to get my tech advice from Best Buy and the likes...I've been to a few of the local pc shops here in town and talked at length with these guys and with some of the different vendors listed on Pricewatch...that is why I come to hear/see if you folks have heard this...Oh well...research continnues...

btw-bought the OS (XP Pro), HD, Mouse, KB, case, mobo & and my fav Norton SystemWorks 2002 Professional today..RAM on its way from Crucial....the vid card will be the last thing I think (besides the sound card..trying Ranchdog's suggestion for a while...using on-board sound...we will see how far it makes it through UT http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ).

Thanks...keep 'em coming http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well...last night I talked with my most trusted & dependable local pc shop..and the owner and I have a long relationship...he said there is nothing wrong with the Ti500..the problem is that retailers were afraid to be left holding them once the GF4 had been announced....I did find a few on line last night...including the one BB noticed. So, since it will be the last thing I buy I am working on it...lol

Hey iisbob that is some great advice about the Ti200 and the Ti500.I have read in the gaming mags that the Ti200 gives the best bang for the buck.I think I'll wait until the GeForce 4 arrives ,then pick up the Ti200 after the price drops.Question is, will I see a significant performance boost from my current 32MB GeForce 2 ?

Yes, especially if it's the MX version; as the MX card has a reduced graphics chipset-only two pipelines for memory whereas the G3 chipset uses 4.

The Ti200 is the exact same chip as the Ti500, only the core is clocked 35 mhz lower-they both use DDR 64 MB's running at 400 mhz { 200 x 2 }. With just a little effort you can get the Ti200 to run as fast or faster than the Ti500. But i see no point in this for only a 1-3 possible point increase in speed in a benchmark.

The Ti200 replaces the original G3, the Ultra, and the Pro. i wouldn't be surprised if they " discontinued " the The Ti500 ( actually just making it the future Ti200 ) to make room for the G4 series.

However, for now-money wise and performance wise, the Ti200 is the best buy.

Sure is a bear trying to find one of those Ti500's http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I got one at J and R (http://www.jandr.com) ...or at least I ordered one lol-It was the VisionTek Xstacy..final cost $305 including shipping....we'll see how it goes...this has TV and DVI, but no software bundle...I still want one of the Asus 8200 Pure Ti500's...but I can wait (unlike the kids)...my GF2 MX 400 is doing just fine http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

This is poordevil,I need to check by this site more often!

So, I am running an Athlon 1.33 on on Asus A7M266 mobo. I've got 512mb PC 2100 DDR SDRAM.Running XP and a 40gb 7200rpm HDD.

It is mostly a gaming rig.But it does okay surfing the web and sending e-mail too http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Now there is this new card coming out,the GeForce 4[followed by some huge number]Well I'll tell you, it is nuts trying to keep up! But I don't,really.I just can't justify dropping $400 on a video card that will be behind the curve in 9 months or so.But I would like to pick up a GeForce 3 Ti500 or Ti200 when the 4's come out.

Ok, getting on the reply bandwagon here so I don't know how much new or useful information I can give to this string, but here goes:

First, the specs -

GeForce3 Ti200
175MHz core, 200MHz DDR RAM (400MHz really)

GeForce3 Ti500
240MHz core, 250MHz DDR RAM (500MHz really)

GeForce4 Ti4200
225MHz core, 250MHz DDR RAM (500MHz really)

GeForce4 Ti4400
275MHz core, 275MHz DDR RAM (550MHz really)

GeForce4 Ti4600
300MHz core, 325MHz DDR RAM (650MHz really)

According to the grapevine, the GF3 Ti500 isn't being produced as much by NVidia, so card makers aren't getting as many Ti500 chips; NVidia is supposedly doing this to stem inventory losses because it projects a sharp drop in Ti500 demand as the GF4's come out.

Because I'm typing this several weeks after the original message, the GF4's are already starting to come out, but only the 4400 and 4600 models. NVidia is also apparently delaying shipment of 4200 chips to allow card vendors to flush GF3 Ti500 models.

The main thing with the GF4 Ti chips is that they've got a few more tweaks and an extra pixel shader (the GF3 has one) so the GF4 Ti4200 whomps the GF3 Ti500 despite being 15MHz slower, and they both have the same speed RAM. So buying into a GF3 Ti500 right now is a bad idea. In fact, if you're reading this now, you should already notice the GF3 Ti200 coming down in price quite a bit, while the GF3 Ti500 is still slightly above the estimated cost of the GF4 Ti4200 of $200.

I think the whole thing is one big mess by NVidia because if you've been keeping an eye on the calendar, you'll notice that the time between GeForce numbers (1 to 2, 2 to 3) was a full year, but from 3 to 4 was only about 9 months. So what really happened is that the GF3 Ti500 was put to pasture a little too quickly, but NVidia is holding out on its replacement, the best GF4 chip: the Ti4200. At a projected $200, the GF4 Ti4200 is the best deal for those previously looking at the GF3 Ti500.

If you really can't wait, get a GF3 Ti200; killer graphics and a darn good price. If you can wait another 2 to 3 months (hang in there!), you should be able to snatch up a GF4 Ti4200 and not have to worry about upgrading for at least a year and a half. For you, I suggest waiting for the GF4 Ti4200, because you will be able to get it cheap before this summer's DirectX 8/8.1 games come out and still enjoy your games now on the still capable GeForce2.

As for me, I have a GeForce2 Ti (250MHz core, 200MHz DDR RAM) and I'm planning to upgrade to a GeForce4 Ti4200 this coming fall/holiday season. Generally, you should upgrade by 2 'generations' if you want to see a real, no questions asked improvement in your games.
