My brother-in-law is going to buy a new notebook, and me being an engineer he has asked my help. Its upto u guys now 2 save my pride by giving me the right advice.
His choice right now is the HP Pavilion DV 6114 EA. The link to it's specification is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00778589&lc=en&cc=in&dlc=en&product=3263237&lang=en#
The specifications that he wants are similar to this.
My questions are:
1. Is an HP notebook good enough?
2. If so is this model good enough?
3. Are Acer, Toshiba or other notebooks better and u recommend any of them?
4. If so what about their pricings?
5. Should he opt for core 2 duo instead of Core duo?
Thanks a lot for ur help guys. ( In anticipation of course :) )

Its hard to answer all those questions without knowing what he will be using it for. The answer is different depending what he will need out of it.

My questions are:
1. Is an HP notebook good enough?
In my opinion, no. I only recommend ACER, IBM/Lenovo and Toshiba. Does that mean you cannot have a positive experience with HP, the answer to that is also no.
2. If so is this model good enough?
See the answer above
3. Are Acer, Toshiba or other notebooks better and u recommend any of them?
I personally think ACER is the best value right now.
4. If so what about their pricings?
I already gave you that.
5. Should he opt for core 2 duo instead of Core duo?
It depends on your budget and your needs. Since laptops are not easily upgraded, I usually recommend people by more PC than they need so you can grow into it.
It is hard to say what is needed without knowing what the use is. A few things to consider:
Will it be carried around a lot? Look for something smaller and lighter.
Will it be used on battery power often? Look for good battery life.
Other than that I will backup classics's recommendations of Acer/IBM/Toshiba. I personally favor IBM, they make some really good business laptops. But this again speaks to what your need is, I use mine for work so it does everything I need. If you wanted gaming you could probably do better.

Thanks guys, u've been a big help. The purpose of the laptop is that my brother-in-law is a musician and runs an audio recording studio. He needs the notepad for sound programming, which involves lots of plug ins and stuff which I don't have a great idea of, but I think u experienced guys will be able to make out.
One more question, what are your opinions on Sony Vaio.
One more question, what are your opinions on Sony Vaio.
Overpriced...you are paying a premium for the Sony name.
