Hi,
I'm on a network with 3 pcs and 3 macs. Everything worked fine until I changed the username and pw on one of the macs. Now I get an error that my pc cant find the network path when trying to log in to the mac from my pc. Ive tried network wizard, tried registry tricks from other postings, disabled firewalls...
I have to navigate to my workgroup, bc the mac no longer shows up in my local network, instead its in "workgroup." When the login screen appears i type the new user/pw and it automatically puts my computer name in front of the username. example: i type sarah for login and the username refreshes with CARRIE\sarah (carrie is my pc name)
The settings on the mac are all correct, win sharing is checked etc. It was working before I changed the name. Seems I have to change the path in the pc and I dont know how bc its still looking for the old username. im on xp

From the PC, right click My Computer and click Map Network Drive. Do you see a mapped drive for your mac?

From the PC, right click My Computer and click Map Network Drive. Do you see a mapped drive for your mac?
when the window pops up it asks to specify a drive letter to connect to, and then a folder. I clicked browse and i do see the mac in my Workgroup but I cant select it from this window bc its not a folder. Is this what you're asking?
Yesterday I installed some windows components from the control panel. Now the mac can connect to my shared folder just fine. But when Im asked to login its looking for the mac on my computer... its still changing the path by putting my computer name in front of it.

Did you change just the user name and password OR did you also change the name of the MAC itself? Just not 100% sure if that's what you meant. If it so happens you actually changed the name of the computer itself, try restarting the system you've been using to try and access the mac with.
If I am correct about you changing the mac name, and you already tried what I mentioned to no avail... let us know how you have your network setup. Perhaps this will help shed a little more light on things.
Good luck :D

i changed the username and pw in the accounts setup for the mac. i dont think i changed the actual mac name. i just went into accounts, then edited the user and pw.
And excuse my ignorance.. i dont know the terms here and not at all certain how to explain the network soooo i'll explain exactly what i see and whats plugged into what... we have 6 computers (3 mac, 3 pc), we have a router with an ethernet plugged into the wall and 3 computers are connected to this. The other 3 have ethernets connected directly to the wall in 3 different offices and then we have a modem thing downstairs. Our connection is DSL.
All the other computers show up in my "local network" but this one I cant connect to is showing up in my "workgroup" connection. This computer can connect to me no problem, but I cant connect to it.
Our windows is operating on XP and mac on OSX

It does not sound like a problem on the windows machine but on the mac. When you see it put the computer name in front it is because it failed to authenticate and it is saying here try this. Here is a snippet from apple.com

For existing users
Note: Mac OS X 10.2 requires these steps, but users of Mac OS X 10.3 or later may not need any of them. If an existing Mac OS X 10.3 or later account can't log in from Windows, just perform steps 1, 2, 3, and 9.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts.
Select the account.
Click Edit User.
If you're editing your own account (the logged-in user), you must take the additional step of typing your password in the Current Password field and then pressing Return. This is not required when editing other accounts.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to log in from Windows".
When selecting "Allow user to log in from Windows" for any account other than your own, you see the message, "To enable SMB support password reset is required. Do you want to reset password?" Though this message does not appear for your account when you're logged in as an administrator user, it is still true. When enabling Windows login for your own account, you must change your password at the same time.
You are prompted to reset the password. Click OK.
Enter the new password, and click Save.
Try to log in from Windows with the selected account. If you can, then you're finished.
If the selected account cannot log in to Windows Sharing on the first try, go back to that user's account and change the password again.
