View Full Version : Adware risks in Recycler folder

Hi, can anyone help? I am running XP Home SP2 and have run Norton Internet Security AntiVirus. It highlights 4 risks (AdwareGain) located in C:\Recycler. Using "Run" and DOS commands I can locate the Recycler Folder but a DIR command shows the folder to be empty. I have tried deleting the specific Adware files using del path comands but again this comes up empty. However Norton still insists these Adware files exist. Norton have a removal tool for AdwareGain but when I run this I can see it scanning the relevant folder but it fails to highlight the specific files identified in the virus scan.
Has anyone else come across this or does anyone know of a fix? Norton identifies these files as minor risks so I am not sure how much effort to expend. Specific file names are as follows. Full path on 1st, abbreviated for the rest.
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-179695992-1774775551-915648631-1003\Dc70\ljppprph.exe
\Dc69\gtrawbm.fil
\Dc67.exe
GatorRes.dll

I began to post some possible ways to delete them but on second thought I think you should first try posting a HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php) log in this thread and some Malware pros can assist you in further efforts for eradication of the problem. 2 heads (or more) are better than one in this case and will have a better chance for success.

Thanks for the advice Fruss Tray Ted.

I have attached a HijackThis log file as suggested. A rudimentary scan of the log file and the help revealed just how little I know about this stuff.

Hopefully the logfile will enable someone to offer some solutions.

Please post the log in plain text. Use multiple replies in if necessary until the whole log is posted.

Sorry I don't understand. I thought Notepad was plain text and when I view the attachment it contains everything that was in the original, unless I am missing something.

Hi Peskeress

What PrntRhd means is that you should copy the text from notepad, and paste the text directly into your reply, so it appears on the screen for everyone to see.

Just open notepad, select all and then select edit-copy.

Reply to this message, and in the reply box, right click and select 'paste'. Your text will now appear onscreen when you view the post.

Sometimes HijackThis logs are long. You may find that it doesn't all fit in one reply.
If this is the case, just find where you left off, copy that text from notepad, and submit a new reply, pasting the text into the reply box.

Oh, and Welcome aboard!

No-one got back to you yet on this?
Perhaps you could contact a moderator and get it moved to the security forum - we generally wait for the HijackThis experts to look at this stuff, and they tend to congregate on the security forum.

The only thing I see in the log is a minor bit of corporate spyware... If you want to fix it, open a HJT scan and put a check by:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

You can run a couple other scans if you want to check deeper for infections:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall...

and... AVG AS (Ewido)...

Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close ewido. Do not run it yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Restart back into Normal Mode.

Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the Ewido log and the new HijackThis log.

Post all three logs.... They are likely to require several posts... If you get a whole bunch of cookie entries in the AVG AS log, edit them out since they are not helpful...

Guys, Thanks for your help on this. Unfortunately I will be unable to progress before Monday.
