Right now I'm using a dell 4600 to research and trouble-shoot my first build. After I'm finished and everything is stable, I'd like to use the dell processor in a re-build effort to have a useful 2nd pc.

I know dell has alot of proprietary stuff in their pc's, like the mobo and connections, so I wanna dump just about everything except the cpu and vid card.

I'm curious, does dell use specially ordered and configured cpu's that are unusable in other mobo's?

Cpu-z says my processor is a p4 2.8 socket 478 mpga family f model 3.

Nope, Dell doen't use 'custom' cpus...that would defeat their 'cost saving' measures.

Socket 478 hardware is disappearing fast. You're unlikely to find anything with modern capabilities, but you can certainly build a cheapo secondary system around that CPU. Just try to avoid any SiS chipset-based mobo's.
