Hello to all,
First of all, I want to thank you in advance for the support. The PC Guide is a great forum! Now for the question. I would like to know if there is a place for real in depth technical reviews of NIC's and Networking in general, on the LAN level. The usual suspects ( Tom's Hardware Guide, ZDNet. The only two I know of...) have limited coverage. I have been to Barnes & Noble looking for books, of which most are out of date. I am looking to purchase some NIC's, and the related hardware to make my own LAN. I am not looking for wireless. Just old fashioned RJ-45, cat5 or cat5e cabling is satisfactory. Currently I only have access to dial up modem (AT&T is STILL working on broadband cable internet after TWO years in the Northwest Denver area). But I would like to upgrade to cable or satellite in the future. Any Ideas out there?

Hi moikulta,

PRACTICALLYNETWORKED (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/)
has some good info.

SHARKY (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/guides/home_lan_guide/) has some good info also.

Hope that helps you get started. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

This forum http://forums.speedguide.net/index.php is largely dedicated to networking.

Two years and counting in NW. Denver? I'm in Southeast Denver and they haven't even started yet here. Heck I know of some places in Aurora that when they installed cable 15 years ago and haven't even buried it yet it still sits laying out across backyards.

Thanks to Steve, sea69, and Gallaeglagh for the links!!
Hey Gallaeglagh, I dig that Cracked windshield state...lmao!! Isn't that the truth!! I have been on this windshield for four years now this summer, and I finally have to replace it because I almost can't see out of it!! I finally said enough is enough and wasn't buying one every year! As far as the cable goes, I was informed that part of the agreement between TCI, and AT&T was that the PUC dictated that the denver metro area was to be finished with the fibre optic within 1.5 yrs of the takeover. I was glad at the time to hear that because I really wanted broadband for internet. Well, I live in thornton, and the news here is that they are starting now to lay the groundwork for the broadband access. I have had cable here, but the ironic thing is that parts of brighton, broomfield, and the area between boulder and westminster already have it. (The really well off individuals in their new neighborhoods). Once again, thanks for the info, and with your permission, is that Cracked Windshield State available for use?
