I am going to FDISK and FORMAT my hard disk and install Windows XP.
I am going to partition the disk. How big should I make the C partition where Win XP will reside???

And.................
because I'm upgrading to XP....
will I have to install WIN98 then upgrade to XP?
or will XP just make me put in the 98 disk to verify that I do, in fact, have a WIN98 copy????

Thanks everyone!!!!!!

Yes all u do is put the 98 disk in to verify u have a valid copy of windows. Also on the partition aspect just boot from your cdrom, set the boot menu to cdrom in the BIOS. Hit del on startup, unless its HP or COmpaq it might be something else and change the 1st boot device to cdrom. After that it will boot to the cdrom, and xp will take care of everything.

XP (pro) uses over 1gb just for an install...how much space you give it depends on what else you're doing with the system. Are you going to install programs to a different drive? Are you going to use a separate partition to backup data?

I would give it 10-15gb on a 20gb drive, other situations would change my decision...

My thinking was to have the C drive contain only the operating system (WIN XP) and put everything else (programs, files, games) on the D drive.
Is this a sound approach?? Or is there a better scheme or way of organizing.

In that case, you shouldn't need more than 3-4gb...

Well, a couple of things to add, XP likes to make a big swap file based on how much memory you have. And then there's the hibernate file, if you want to go on stand by, it's big too. I quit separating apps from the OS cause I might add or throw aways drives and have to force "letter" assignments.

Anyway, have fun...
