View Full Version : Ethernet not being utilized.

I reformatted my computer today, and when I went to set up my internet, my modem was only able to use the USB connection, rather than the Ethernet connection. The lights on the modem indicate that the cord is working, it just does not allow me to connect to the internet. I've tried calling my ISP (who claim my ethernet card needs to reinstalled/is broken) but it worked fine like a week ago, and it's integrated into my motherboard (ASUS A8N-SLI). How can I test to see if my ethernet component on my mobo is damaged? Why is my computer not recognizing the ethernet connection? It claims there's no adapter installed (which I did install the software for), yet it works fine when connected with USB. I need the ethernet working because I need my better modem (which grants wireless access throughout the house) set up, but it only has ports for ethernet cables, not USBs.
I'm extremely frustrated. My modem supplier/ISP has left me without solution so this forum is my last hope.
Thanks in advance.

Did you install the motherboard drivers after you reinstalled XP?
What is showing in Device Manager? Is the onboard NIC showing at all? With an error? What?

Yes I reinstalled the motherboard drivers afterwards.
It would appear that my ethernet is no longer being detected by my computer. Under device mananger>> network adapters there are only two default adapters. It doesn't mention anything about ethernet adapters.
I suppose this means it is defective?
Where did you get the drivers from Asus or nVidia?
If from Asus, try the latest package from nVidia.

I got the drivers from Asus. I successfully hooked up the ethernet now, except it seems like it's moving at 56k speed! It says 'Connected at 100.00 mbps' but it takes a few minutes for pages to load and d/ls seems to be capped at 16kb/s.
My PC is acting very strangely. I completely wiped both drives, and it still acts the same way before the reformat. What could be the problem here?

In that case you need to ask again your ISP and/or re-check your IP.

Why not check the actual speed of ur connection ?
not understand why cleaning up the drives has anything to deal with slow or fast
56k usually is for old modem phone line connection, current speed never be that slow anyway
100Mbps is never able to reach

I also tink if he think about bandwidth available for the page to load down. This looks really a simple problem, I don't know why wireless access can be up to 100Mbps  not including the details given are really limited over a modem whose user wants to get over 48Mbps  , how ccould that be taught anyway ?
It is just an explanation -- a guess of my area internet connection speed :)

I reformatted for other reasons, not because of my internet. I thought my internet was being dragged down by something running on my comp (some kind of malware or what have you), so I just figured it would have been remedied by a drive wipe.
Well my internet seems to be working normally right now. Wireless is back online and my speed is normal again. Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys!
Oh, and I know the connection isn't actually 100.00 mbps (although it does say that), I just know that's what it's 'supposed' to say that when operating normally at it's fastest.

Sorry for double posting everybody. But now, the problem's back. Games that need to connect to the internet can't do it (despite being in the exceptions list), and once again, it takes forever for sites to load.
So if the hardware is working fine, then it must be something with some software, right?

Go to command line, type
nslookup www.google.com <enter>
What dns server responds? Is this your ISP's DNS server?
