Hi folks,

I'm a newbie so please be patient.

I am trying to determine the cost drivers of ide/ata hard drives. What are the relative cost contributions of components to the overall bill of materials? The objective is to identify cost reduction opportunities from relaxing certain design constraints (performance and capacity) However, compenents must be available in volume.

Cost drivers identified so far are:
1. # of platters
2. # of heads
3. Embedded servo vs. dedicated servo
4. Spindle motor speed
5. Onboard logic (don't know if this is variable cost i.e. can use
cheaper DSPs/controllers)

Don't know the percentage contribution, nor absolute numbers for these as
relates to HDD cost. Any data would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure this has been discussed previously so I apologise in advance for
wasting b/w.

Thanks,
Anu

Don't know if this one is homework, but if it is, you sure must have some interesting classes....... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Overall, though, I think this particular question may be a little beyond the scope of this particular forum...we usually deal with the end product, and broken ones at that! Not putting them together from scratch.....sheesh...I don't even know where to tell to go to start looking for more info.

You can start here there mostly PDF docs but is on your subject.
And mjc is right, not to sound harsh but this is a trouble shooting forum not A buisness one.Good luck

Man, I can't remember the last time I manufactured a hard drive I've done just about every thing else to them http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
