I have purchased a wireless router - model netgear
The problem is I cannot connect via wireless
but can connect via cable.

When I click on the wireless icon - (note I have not given it any security to make thinks simple) - my netgear router shows up in the Wireless network connection.

I click on the icon and connect - when it does connect -

It gives me message of acquiring IP address etc. - usually it connects but packets sent usuallly only says 100 and received only gives 0 so thus I cannot access any websites.

Help what should I do?

you need to get the router setup properly first. I will give you the details for the wireless config.

1) Go to your browser and login into the router: 192.168.1.1 or maybe it's 192.1.0.1. I don't know, you will have do the research on that yourself.

2) Set your SSID to: msa969

3) Set the region to: United States. or whatever your country is.

4) Set the channel to: 4 (2.427 GHZ)

5) set the Mode to: mixed

6) set the wireless security to: WPA-PSK

7) set the encryption to: TKIP

8) set the passhrase to: pcguidewireless

9) set the keylifetime to: 30 minutes

10) Click: APPLY

DONE. .

now try to connect like you did last time, and then when it asks the passphrase, you enter: pcguidewireless

Note - SteveLee's instructions 2) etc could not be carried out???

I connected wireless router to cable-model - hardwired from router to my computer typed in http://www.192.168.0.1 then a setup wizard page came up and I just followed instructions and it did the rest (automatic)

what happens though wireless is still not working.
When i take the physical cable off then when I click on the wireless network Icon in task tray at bottom of computer I got a message requesting WPA key.

What is this????

Note SteveLee's instruction from 2 how do I do it, not clearly explained. It was not on the browser page when I type HTTP;//192.168.0.1

Alright, we'll have this fixed soon. The SSID is not a showstopper in terms of being able to connect. The WPA Passphrase is Critical though.

Here's how it looks from my Netgear Router FVG 318. Now this is a VPN firewall router and it might look different from yours, but I have set up Linksys and DLink routers and Access points and there is always somewhere to change the SSID and Passphrase.

Now here is the view from my wireless icon on my computer:
Note that I am using the windows wireless setup and not the DLink program.
I generally try to get the windows wireless zero config to do the work first, and then if that does not work, I'll use the Wireless company's next.

So now notice that in my wireless area there is a 2wire702 and an unsecured linksys setup.

The SSID is NOT critical to getting your wireless setup to work. Even if you cannot change it, you will be able to see it on this menu and be able to click it and connect . So do not worry if you are unable to change your SSID. For example, I could easily connect to the unsecured linksys connection of my boneheaded neighbor even though we have totally different SSIDs. HE cannot connect to mine because he doesn't know my passphrase.

Do make sure you put the passphrase in, I believe the vocabulary your were using is "WPA key" . Thats the passphrase they are asking for.

Your wireless screen setup may be different than mine, but if there is a place to select WPA for security, then there will definitely be a place to add the passphrase .

Once you get the router configured , then we may have to turn on your "wireless zero config" service on your computer.

I have physically connected the laptop with cables to the router rather then wireless and it is not working WHYYYYYYYY? Surely it shows (I am unable attach an image to this post - how do I out an image here???? the attachment limit of 19.5kb is rediculously low) that there is a connection and it is receiving and sending packets – but the internet is not working. This time even http//192.168,0.1

I need it to eventually work to wireless – HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZE

I have tried everything.

I think I know what your problem is. Whenever you buy a new device and it doesn't configure itself and PC devices, auto-magically, to work with your network, it means the little network elves are out of the office. It could be because it is the holidays and they are visiting relatives and such. Elves have families too you know. Luckily the magic network elves leave behind instructions on how to set up new devices and connect to them. They call them MANUALS. I think they call them this because you have to "manually" set things up. You know, a do-it-yourself, walk through type deal.

I'll bet if you read the manual for your device online or on the CD that came with the device it will really help you. Then you can ask specific questions about problems you encounter, rather than simply saying "why doesn't it work?"

I have installed router before.

There is nothing to it.
with cat5 cables:
Connect the broadband cable modem to the router.
Connect the cable from notebook to router - turn on presto it works.

Yes I have read the manual (even a simpleton like me who loathes manuals) can follow ONE-PAGE (YES - ONE PAGE) PDF manual.
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/mr814v2_install_guide.pdf

link fromhttp://kbserver.netgear.com/products/MR814v2.asp

I have even skim read the larger 148 pages now that was freightening but I swear non of it was relevant.
