With the Retail you get Phone tech support from Microsoft.
With the OEM you don’t.
Your tech support is supposed to be provided by the company that assembled the system using the OEM version.
Other than that They are the exact same O/S

Yoda,
I think the only difference lies in "support" rendered directly from MS with the Retail version and no support if you go OEM. It is my understanding that with the discount in price for the OEM resellers, they pick up the tech-support in exchange. The question would be, does the OEM reseller have a capable tech support?
Big question would then be...do you need the tech support from MS or the OEM?
I don't know if there are any manuals involved with the Retail version...I doubt if you'd get them with the OEM.
Yeah, and what Rick said! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Well the reason I asked is I'm getting ready to start pumping a lot of money into this new system, and I do not want to make any mistakes on buying or paying more for something i don't really need. everything i have been shopping for is all OEM from processors to floppyies, as far as teck support I have all that I need here at the forums http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif the only thing I do want that is retail would be the processor AMD xp1800+( if i can find one) and the Mobo (which I can get the Soyo dragon in retail)if it is just the support side thats the difference I can get OEM a lot cheaper just don't want to skimp on the OS,Processor, and Board,ya start talking 2 to 3 grand and my legs get watery, thanks guy's http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

One other note,
Unless you intend to build a dualie .
You don’t need the PRO version.
The Home and Pro are the same O/S except for Multiple Processor support

Yoda,
Just a thought, when I was chatting with mjc and Pete on mIrc before building my Father's system I posed the question to them regarding upgrading to XP.
The general idea I got from them was to consider waiting until they come out with the Second Edition XP, so to speak, because of all the patchs necessary for bugs and security right now...well, just a thought! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
