All,
I just put together my 1st computer and in the BIOS, temp on the CPU seems way too hot (running idle)
Motherboard: ASUS P5B Deluxe
CPU: Intel DUO 6300
The fan is running fine (fan came with the CPU, retail version).
Anything I could have done wrong that would be driving this? Any ideas of how to fix?
Thanks,
Jerman

Have you removed the thin protective foil from the thermal pad on the heatsink before fitting it to the CPU?

Nope...must have missed that in instructions. I'll take a look. Thanks!

I think kiosk is on the right track, especially, if it happens quickly with no load. If you've been monitoring the temps from the BIOS and see them climbing quickly...bail quickly since those are high temps.
But yes, I would say look at the CPU/heatsink interface for problems first...

Yeah, you don't want the temps to go higher than about 65-70 degrees. After that you're approaching the maximum core temperature and individual transistors can start to fail, resulting in a dead CPU... In fact, my personal 'max temp' is 55 degrees under max load. Anything over that and I will re-evaluate the cooling system and maybe reapply thermal grease (I travel to LAN parties a lot and heatsinks are known to move around a bit if the system is banged).

Yeah, you don't want the temps to go higher than about 65-70 degrees.Woah! Check the whitepapers again! The max die temp for the Core 2 Duo's is around 60C! Any higher and it starts to melt!
jerman - If those temps you reported are accurate, I would suggest RMA'ing that CPU right now. Just replace it. The poor thing has suffered temps that are 15C above the max die temp! That's significant! It has probably suffered damage already. Get it replaced or it may give you problems down the line.
