I recently set-up a wireless network for a friend of mine and it seems to not be working correctly so I was wondering if any of you guys could help. Its the first time I have done it but none of their family knows anything about computers so I'm the best person really.

It is blueyonder cable broadband and the modem is a Motorola SURFboard. I have connected this to a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. I have then connected that to the main PC via a network cable, I'm not sure if it matters but that is plugged into a ethernet>USB adapter as the PC has no network card.

When I first set it all up it all worked, the PC connected to the internet first time and could access web pages etc. And my friends laptop picked up the wireless and connected and that worked fine. The problem comes when the PC is turned back on from being shutdown beforehand. The PC does not connect correctly and says limited connectivity but the laptop can connect still. If you then go into Network Connections on the PC and right click the connection and select Disable, then click Enable it sometimes connects and its alright, though other times it does not and you have to reboot the router and modem for it to work. This is all a major annoyance and I have no real idea of what the problem could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Honestly my first step would be to ditch the USB dongle and get a regular NIC. They are cheap enough and easy to install in a desktop, most don't even require extra drivers.

The fact that it works sometimes and not others, and disabling/enabling it corrects the issue really makes it seem that the problem is that USB converter. Especially since the wireless keeps working fine, so the modem and router are working.

Cheers for your help, have installed network cards before so shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks again.
