Welcome to the http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif , Blackcat-we need a little more info than just " an IBM computer ". As all modern PC's are IBM clones. { with the obvious exception of apple's }.

Can you tell us what model no# this computer is if it's a retail system? Or if it's a custom built system can you give us the motherboard brand/model no#?

Even the newest athlon XP series still use the same cpu socket architecture ( however there are some BIOS upgrades necessary on most boards ) so you should be able to upgrade your 750 mhz T-bird to as hi as a 1900+ in most cases.

If you want to use one of the newer XP athlon's then we'll need to know specifically what motherboard brand/model you have in order to assist you in deteremining if it's feasible.

If you go to this link here (http://www.belarc.com/Download.html) and download the program it will tell you a lot about your system. You can then put the information on this board.

JM..

Check your Mboard and see if you have a 100/133 Bus Clock Jumper.
You are currently using a 100 Front Side Bus.

If 100 FSB is your only option.... The XP series CPU isn't compatable.
They are 133 FSB chips. Not to say the XP wouln't try to work with 100
FSB but that would be underclocking the chip and defeating the purpose
of an upgrade.

Athlon Tbirds are available from 1.4 Ghz and below that utilize a FSB of 100. Those are listed for sale as 1.4 Ghz/200 (confusing, huh). As the 100 FSB is doubled when it reaches the processor. These are known as the B series processors.

As previously posted a BIOS upgrade may be in order if upgrading to the top of the ladder.

Luck.
