Sun has released Java 6, says it makes it faster than prior Java and also is backwards compatible.
You can download JRE 6 and the other variants here:

Says no support for Win98/ME, but tried it and it works. Uninstall old JRE versions but test it for breaking applications before tossing the old version installers.
