I was thinking about all the stuff I was gonna put on my new puter, and thinking needed to go download a cookie manager program when a light bulb went off in my head. Went here to Whidbey's page on resources (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Window_memory.htm) again this morning and tried wrapping my brain around explanation again. I should notice increased performance and speed with my new puter, but will still be under same limitations for resources, until we upgrade the OS, right?

And second (related) question is that a friend picked up a bunch of CDs at the flea market from, I think, TechNet or Tech something. Anyway, among the CDs was a W2K "upgrade" CD. I thought part of the resource thing was connected to the FAT32 versus "NTFS" (sorry if letters wrong)..and if so, how could one upgrade from 9x to 2000?...without changing the FAT32 to NTFS stuff? (And no, not to worry, I am NOT experimenting with my puter but one of the guys will for sure..hence the question.)

Ok, Kay,

First one first, the resources are finite blocks of memory that are directly tied to the Win9x operating systems...they are the same limitations. Any of the versions of Windows built on the NT kernel do not have these areas of memory set aside. Each DOS session on an NT kernal machine is run in its own "virtual machine" (a section of memory and resources only for that program and not really linked to anything else....). So theoretically your resource limit becomes the size of the actual RAM plus the size of your pagefile (and if you let it have the freespace on the HD that too, but in reality it is less than that......

Number two....Win2k can run on Fat32, when installing it just select to use Fat32 instead of NTFS. And your new machine should handle a dual boot setup easily, not sure if the upgrade disk can do a dual set-up though...

Not quite sure just what you are defining by upgrade; but if the person just wanted to go from 9x to 2k-then have them simply choose the upgrade option when installing 2k-and to have it leave the current file system intact { it'll give you the choice of using current filesystem or converting to NTFS } during installation.

Once you convert from one type of file system to another ( example; FAT to NTFS )it's a one way street-ther is no going back unless you do a complete wipe and then reinstall.

Hope this answer's your question. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

and i see mjc beat me to it! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOL...iisbob. By "upgrade", I certainly didn't mean ME..lol. I was thinking W2K or XP...currently using 98 with the Service Pack.

mjc: Thanks, that's what I thought I understood. But it raises one more question..sorry. If one installs W2k on the FAT32 stuff..isn't that like running a governor on a car? So, doesn't seem desirable..but if one goes to the NT stuff, you can still "read" all your files on the hard drive, yes? Pardon if stupid, but this stuff seriously tangles my brain up.

rond36: I think you're right..pretty sure have read threads here about people doing that. I just don't want to fool with dual booting and such. Just want to work, play, and surf on my puter. The essentials of life. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Right, 2k will read both file systems, so if you have a separate data partition and leave it Fat32 it will still be readable....
