Not all the places listed are reliable, some have outrageous shipping, but it is a good place to do some research.......

After shopping around for a few years, i'd have to say that NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com) is about the only vendor i do business with now.
They not only offer the best prices, but have a garauntee policy unmatched by anyone. And i've yet to recieve any faulty merchandise from them. Matter of fact, they've refunded my shipping costs on item's before when they were shipped incorrectly.

hey jjoel,
I do a lot on Computer Geeks (http://www.compgeeks.com) and EdgeMicro (http://www.edgemicro.com) .
Geeks deals in a lot of refurb stuff and has always treated me fair. EdgeMicro is out of Oregon so there is no sales tax http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
One thing I have found is, I don't care for any one site completely, but try to keep my purchases to as few as possible.
Gotta weigh the extra shipping over item costs.
Have fun http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

As Bassman mentioned regarding shipping, I noticed with Newegg that there was a much better composite shipping cost than what each of the individual items had posted for shipping...in other words I was quite pleased.
As iisbob mentioned regarding Newegg...I too was pleased with their packaging and service.
Also, Rick turned me on to KD computers (http://www.kdcomputers.com) and I was equally impressed with their speed and packaging, and shipping costs! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hey Bassman, does California have a Use Tax???? If so, you owe use tax on your "out-of-state" purchases on your CA tax return. If there is a line item on your state tax return for use tax, chances are very good that there is something in the state statutes that includes internet purchases as being subject to use tax just like mail order, etc..
Mind you, I'm giving out free advice here. It boggles my mind that people think they can get away without paying sales tax on out-of-state purchases.
But then, as an accountant, I cannot claim ignorance of the law. Shucks.
Word of advice, check your state sales tax laws.
And don't come back and start talking about the moratorium on internet taxation because that does not apply in this case.

I don't know....I'm beginning to see Accountants in a whole new light! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Kinda reminds me of going to the Dentist! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif When you wince when they're digging around they're taught to ask you, "Are you experiencing some discomfort?"
NO! What I'm experiencing here is serious PAIN...similar to when my Accountant goes digging around in my pocketbook! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Blue,
Yes California has a "Use Tax."
Legaly, I should have a "Resellers Permit" and be collecting sales tax on the final sales price of my work. Uuummmm...... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
Some years ago, I looked into all of this and was told that as long as I don't state in my bill, that I am collecting sales tax, I can't be held liable for it.
I know this is not exactly right, but then again it's not exactly wrong. (or is it) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
I appriciate the advice. One day soon, I hope to have all of this in the proper order http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hmm there are a few ways of looking at it #1). Do you have a buisness lisence? (which is no big deal)any Idiot with $25.00 can get one, thats just so local polititions can get there money from you.You really don't even need one,That just proves that you aquired a lisense to do buisness in that town, Not that you know what you are doing.
#2).Do you have an account in that said buisness name?
#3).If so the best thing to do is take $500.00 (when you can afford,)and file for a Chapter S-Corporation sole propriaty ship. Then you are as leagal as it gets for a small buisness.
#4). Of course you will have to pay taxes quarterly (But you have leway on that)....... Do not really understand how internet trans action gets goverened and seems no one owns or can leagaly control the Internet (if it was you can bet your bippy there would be no porn, guns or anything else that some people enjoy)So I'm not reall sure where to go on that one.
AS far as I know if you are selling a product you have to and can be held accountable for sales taxes But there is no such thing as collecting taxes on just Labor.
(Example) if you up grade a system you bought parts, you have already paid the taxes, you do not have to collect taxes on this you just add in a higher labor charge to cover you out of pocket cost for the taxes or (called your mark up,not profit) Profit is where you have to pay the taxes.

Hey Bass,
Yeah, I was coming from a personal consumer perspective. I really think you should get your business situation straightened out. Not sure exactly what form of business you have, but yes, you should not have to pay sales tax on a part that becomes integral to the finished product and yes, you should be collecting and paying over sales taxes. You need to get yourself a seller's permit. Hmmmm, guess I had better leave it at that.
Hope my post helps at least one consumer who buys something from out-of-state and uses it in their own state. Chances are nine times out of ten, use tax will be owed on that purchase. It just depends on the state, although I think most states have something going nowadays.
