I brought a digital camera and wanted to download pictures into my computer. It was on a usb connect but my computer won't recognize the camera unless I have the win98 se istallation CD. I got mine preinstalled so I don't have a cd. I want to buy a new one anyway. So what should I do? Will buying a new win 98 se and installing it to my computer have any effect to my preinstalled win98 se or does it just overwrites the old and gives me the new? I want to also see if I can upgrade xp but my camera doesn't support it. It's a cheesy camera, a concord eye-q 3x digital. Unless anyone knows that it does work but I would need a download of drivers or something and if it does will win xp upgrade be sufficient instead of the full?

Your preinstalled copy of win98se should have a disk with it.
If not it should have the cab files on the hard drive
When you add or remove features under 98 does it ask for a disk
Or does it make the changes without asking for a cd?
Like adding or removing the default installed software..

If it does these operations then the files are stored on the hard drive
Spending the $ for another copy is a waste.
You should be able to download the updated drivers from the hardware manufacturer and or Microsoft web site.

Upgrading to XP for support of a camera is a bit of a waste IMHO
However it (XP) does have better direct support for many digital cameras BUT Not All.

You should have got an installation CD with the camera (according to their website) if not then the Drivers(~1MB) and Manuals can be downloaded from HERE (http://www.concordcam.com/support/downloads/downloads.htm)

The camera'S CDROM or the Downloaded Drivers should be installed prior to connecting the Camera to the PC. I just wonder why you are being asked for the Windows SetUp. As Rick said the preinstalled copy should be on your HDD - most commonly in the Windows/Options/Cabs folder.

You know what, it was preinstalled but it was from a copy I just found out so I really need one. It was burned by someone and uploaded into my comp. The guy has no way of getting a hold of that CD. So what are my options do you think?

First could you clarify a few things:
(1) You do or don't have any folder called CABS on your HDD.
(2) You do or don't have an installation CD for the Camera? (This is not the same as the Win98 CD).
(3) How exactly did you go about installing the camera on the PC?
(4) Did you just plug it into a USB port, without having first installed the software from the camera's installation CD?
(5) At what point were you asked for the Win98 setup CD?

If you have to get a new copy of Win98 plus the XP upgrade then I would imagine the best option would be to just invest in a full version of XP.

If you want to upgrade to XP I suspect that you will need the product key of your current version of windows for which you don't have a CDROM (someone else confirm this please!)

no, you do not need the product key for the current OS to upgrade.

Thanks sea; couldn't think straight; having one of THOSE days. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Just a thought. If you can get your camera setup OK to download using Win98 and then decide to upgrade to XP (which you say doesn't support your camera); you could still setup XP to dual boot with Win98 and then boot into Win98, whenever you need to use it for the camera.

Ok...
1. I have a folder called cab in my hdd but when I looked in there, there was just one file and I can't open it. And I mean just one file.
2. I do have the istallation CD for the camera.
3. I followed the direction and downloaded the software and drivers into the computer first.
4. After that I then proceeded to plug my camera in the usb port. Then I went into the software program they had for the camera support.
5. This is when I got the prompt to install my win98 se cd.
Now one more question, if I decide all else fails and get a winxp upgrade will it work with my camera? The back of the label says compatible with win 98, me, 2000. Does not say win xp. But someone told me that w/ xp theres a direct system or something so you don't need to worry about it but only on some cameras, not all. BTW, I'm doing all this for a girl believe it or not http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif but shes worth it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi cantoo http://www.plauder-smilies.de/love.gif We hope she's worth it too!

Would it be possible to borrow a Win98 disk just to get over this hurdle.

After plugging-in the USB (and without entering into the software support) if you shutdown and reboot it would be nice to know if the camera itself is installed correctly.

I'm just guessing that the supporting software needs to configure/setup TWAIN properly - it's not something I understand too well but it is to do with the linkage between the various imaging programs and the way they interact with either a scanner or a camera download.

Someone else more familiar with XP may be able to help you with what XP will and wont support.

Yea, the camera works properly before reboot and not entering into software program. It's just the installation CD itself I need. Anyone wanna sell me one? For cheap? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I doubt it. Ok then, if anyone knows of a good link to purchase a copy of win98 se let me know thx.

what files is is asking for from the Win98 CD?

If it is things like dlls you can find them here (http://www.drd.dyndns.org/), just note whi9ch ones it is asking for, download them to a floder, call it something like camera support, and then when you install the software and it asks for the files point it to that folder.

Ok, when it pops up and asks for the Win98 Cd, click ok like you had inserted the disk, it will then say which file it is looking for, copy that info down...then go looking for it. You will probably only need a couple of files from the CD, so if you can find out which ones you need and donwload them then you won't need the disk......
