Don't know why this is happening. I'm on a linksys modem and router. There's only 2 connections on the router that are active, and the other computer that has it is always off with no activity. For some reason our speed is advertised as 10000/1000

That is my packet flow information. I think it's a little higher than usual for some reason, and it's usually constantly going up.

This is the bandwidth test I took.

Again, I used to get scores around 13000/1200. Not this 1000/1000 crap.

I'm going to continue to do testing (plug me directly into modem, etc.) to see if I can find the solution. I'm not sure it could be spyware, as I just reformatted my computer the other day.

1) Your RWIN may not be optimized for the specified connection speed. This may cause the download/uplink ratio to be skewed a bit.

2) What applications are you downloading? Telcos and cable companies can throttle the connection and "shape" the speed based on the application. (for instance BitTorrents and VOIP applications they do not provide in house).

3) The provider may be having "system issues" that slows everything down, nothing you can control on your end. Do be certain all the cable splitters and connections are tight for all TVs and modems if cable.

Thanks for the response, but I'm pretty sure none of those are the issues.

1) When I plug in my ethernet cable directly into the cable modem (I'm on a router right now), the speed goes back to normal.

2) This shouldn't be the case, as I am taking speakeasy bandwidth tests. To my knowledge, cox doesn't throttle my net.

3) Also not the case. See #1. Also, I asked some of my friends if their cox connections were slow, but none said it was.

Then I would suspect a dodgy router if the speed is normal connected directly to the modem.

Fair enough.

What's a good brand I should get? I have a Linksys cable modem and a Linksys router as of now.

It depends on your personal preferences. Linksys and Netgear are both quite good.

I would look at tweaking the router. Your router could also be doing active filtering on the router and it is slowing down throughput. Here is a good tweak guide.
