Hi.
Not sure if "Shares" is the right term for this:

- The folders which show up under MY NETWORK PLACES in Explorer File Manager - how do you rename these?

Reason: Many of the names which show up, are for network locations which do not exist anymore, but I can't get rid of them from the network share tree.

Also, other network loactions have had their names changed, but the old names still show up in the network locations, and I cannot rename them.

Example: A drive shared as "DIVX_1" on the machine which has the drive, IS accessable, but with a network label of "MP3", and I can't rename it. The drive was once shared as "MP3", then it was moved to another machine, all the files deleted(but the drive not formatted), and renamed to "DIVX_1" - but no matter what I try, it insists on showing up on other computers on the network as "MP3"...

The shared drives are "Share As" with the correct name, but they don't show up that way on the network.

All of the above refers to Win XP Home SP2 on both the machine with the shared drives, and the network client which I want to access the files on.

Anyone know how to rename and/or delete references to old network shares in the network share tree?

Thanks.
:)

When you go into My Network Places, delete the links to the shared folders. Then, browse to the computer in question, open the new folder, and it will re-appear in My Network Places. I think I'm understanding the question properly... :)

Deleted Shares should show up for 48 hours. I think that is default.
From Start, Run type Fsmgmt.msc and hit enter. View the shares make sure the share name is what you think it is.

It also could be a master browser issue. You can stop the browser service on all machines except your main machine.
On the client machines you can change the search for a master browser by editing the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > Browser >
Parameters MaintainServerList
Default value is "Auto". Change value to "No" and reboot machine
