Well, I'm back at it again... fixing the home network when nothing broke it (stupid windows). Everything is working wonderfully, then...

I tried to print something yesterday on the computer named "DOWN" and was told that I couldn't connect to the printer that is plugged into Computer "UP" and shared through simple XP to XP file and printer sharing.

1. I can ping both ways
2. I can radmin into both computers via IP
3. They are both on workgroup "HOME" with different names ("UP" and DOWN")
4. They both have internet access
5. NetGuest account is enabled on both
6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa
restrictannonymous is set to 0 on both
7. YES!!!! simple file sharing is turned on/installed (I told you this was working earlier!)
8. I have shares on both computers
9. I cannot manually add //HOME/xxxxx to my HOME workgroup on either computer

Here's where the problem comes in. On "DOWN" in My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>HOME I see no computer, but on the upstairs computer I see "UP" (like I should)

When I change "DOWN"'s workgroup back to MSHOME it changes it to
My Network Places>Entire Net...>...>MSHOME, but my computer never shows up there. Change it back to HOME so it should join the upstairs computer but it won't join HOME itself.

What would let the computer change it's workgroup but not add itself to it's own workgroup?

I've set up hundreds of XP home networks for myself, friends, family and $ and (I thought) I had already come across and fixed every problem imaginable... I guess not, huh MS?

Any Ideas?
Any help?

When i ran into this heres what i did not saying it will fix it on your computer.

When you go and setup your network using the network wizard
at the end it will ask you if you would like to make a disk.
I created a disk of my network and put it into your other computer. See if that works if not then let me know I have another way of doing this.

Sounds like a firewall. If you cannot see your own machine in My Network Places something is blocking the file sharing ports. Or File and Print sharing is unchecked, which seems unlikely.

Also, don't forget to open network property wizard to see if the check mark for "protecting my computer and network by limiting...." -- and kind of a prevention of remote assistance which should be off for the connection to be on.

This sounds like you are describing the firewall, or at least the Windows firewall. It doesn't need to be off for file sharing to work, you just need to allow certain open ports.

The thing about preventing remote assitance to allow file and printer sharing is just nor true at all. They are totally unrelated things.

ZoneAlarm service was running and was only visible in the processes window.

I forgot that turning off ZA doesn't actually turn off vsmon.exe. Now I remember why I switched to kerio before.

Thank you guys for the firewall reminder.

Add the IP range to the Trusted Zone in ZA, that will keep it open in the LAN.
