I told my friend yesterday that I had bought a new motherboard and a new CPU and he said that before I set everything up I need some sort of CPU Gel. This was the first I'd heard of it so I'm just curious as to what it is and whether I need it or not.

Sounds like he means thermal transfer material.
Cpu with heatsink should already come with thermal meterial most likely attached to the heatsink. If you choose to stick with that stuff make sure you remove any plastic covering before attaching the heatsink to the cpu.
If you want to go with another thermal material like Arctic Silver you will need to clean the heasink surface thoroughly before appliication.
G'day,
This gel or thermal transfer meterial, helps remove heat from your CPU during processing. It's a special formula that allows fast transfer of heat so that your CPU doesn't get fried during processing. It is very important you have this or similar material to reduce heat build up in the CPU or else you won't have a computer for long.
Cheers
