I'm in the market for a new computer. I currently have an AMD 166+ and 266+ that I think would cost too much to upgrade. I can reuse the 17" mon. I'm looking for computer AND software recommendations for learning computer graphics and animation. It's for my 14 year old son who's interested in a CG career. We live in a SMALL rural community and resources are limited. I have between $1k and $1.5k MAX to spend. I'm an electronics tech and learn quick so pour it on.

If you're gonna build it yourself and exclude a monitor, you could get a great AthlonXP system for that price range...look for a kt333 chipset motherboard, pc2700 ddr (at least 512mb), the western digital special edition 80gb hard drive with 8mb cache (AWESOME performance)...

If you want to build a great system but don't want all of the hassle of doing it yourself, I suggest you contact Kevin at www.kc-computers.com (http://www.kc-computers.com)
He built me an AMD system to my specs and I couldn't be happier. He is in New York but still a nice guy. He also offers lifetime tech support, I believe. The only downside is he prefers to use e-mail. You can call him but will get faster response by e-mail(usually within a few hours, no kidding). Just peruse the selections, send him a note telling him what you want and it's smooth sailing.
