I've often wondered a similar question to this general theme so let's blossom this question to include include the following for ANY versions of Windows:
Is there a way to set a password so:
1: An anonymous user cannot get past the log in screen? I hate the cancel button when at this spot.
Or so as to:
2: Password protect various program/files on a pc to where another user cannot get to and modify anything? (See original post.)
3: Password protect the ability to browse on-line other than an outside service or program to block only certain pages and sites? If a server can deny an individuals IP address access to a site, would oneself need a router to be able to do the same but set it to their own liking?
Now anyone remmember the old game show: To tell the truth?
OK, Linux, same question(s).
Thanks, Japhanser for bringing this up, I hadn't thought of it in a while. And thanks in advance for replies y'all.

Hi-
I'm sure you will get more replies from people with a little more knowledge, but here is my two cents:
First of all, I ended up putting a bios password in when I was using ME. This is one of the best passwords of all, because you can't even get past the initial boot- and the only way I know of to get past it is to actually pull the battery from the MB. ( Of course, this does you no good for keeping people from messing with stuff once you have booted into windows.
The other thing that comes to mind is upgrading to XP. It has a lot more security features where you can be the "Administrator" and prevent other people from acessing certain folders and settings. Using the NTFS file system, there are many new security features.
Hope this helps a little bit. Now..... Master Geeks!!!- Take it from here! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I like the NickLock (http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/01q3/010727/index.html) hardware solution rather than a password. You can select which of two hard drives the system will boot from, or lock out both hard drives.

Other than using a 3rd party security program, you could just rename the file Msconfig.exe to another name. Like for example, PCconfig.exe
If you really want to be tricky, change the extention as well. Like, PCconfig.xyz and make it 'Read-Only'.
Just remember the name and/or extention if you change it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Prevent New Users From Logging In (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article01-017)
Hope this helps. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I have previously posted this but be warned it involves editing the registry so do this at your own risk:
If your Win95/98 Computer is used in a multiple user environment you can restrict the computer useage for just authorized users by disabling the Cancel button in the Login box. Follow these steps:
Locate the directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon. If the Logon directory is missing, create it by Right-clicking on the Network folder, select New=>Key and type in Logon. Right-click in the right window pane and select New=>DWORD Value and name it MustBeValidated . Make the value 1 (one).
Exit the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
Rond36 noted that:- This can be defeated by booting to a floppy and using the good old scanreg /restore or boot to safe mode and edit the registry manually or use the last known good config and in Win ME you can use system restore to remove the password requirement. Win 9X is not secure by any means.
At the end of the day it depends just who you are trying to keep out.
