This may sound silly, but do I need to (or is it reccomended that I) reformat my HD when I rebuild my comp with my new motherboard and processor? Or will my winxp installed on my current HD just recognize everything new (mobo, ram, processor) during first OS startup?

Many Thanks

I would say yes you will need to format and reinstall Win XP and you will probably need to call MS to reactivate it like I did when I upgraded my PII 333MHz to an AMD Athlon 1200MHz. I changed the Motherboard and RAM, processor, and video card. Some say that you don't need to do this but I feel that you should.

I agree with rond; if you're going to go to the trouble of doing all that, you might as well reformat too. Just make sure you have backups of documents and stuff. Also, make sure your apps are XP compatible. It can be a real problem if not.

Yep, I always format and reinstall if I swap motherboards. Reason being the motherboard uses lots of drivers, most are specific to the board. Trying to use an existing OS will often result in a flaky computer at best and one that locks up constantly at worst.
