Hi All,
I had an email from my Isp Today, offering me a broadband connection.
Would this be much faster than my 56k dun.
The product was called home 500 the 500 was probally the speed.
How much do you guys/gals pay over there It's £30/$43 a month.
thanks,
kfh.

I have cable at $40/month...DSL is $50/month...and both are MUCH faster than 56K...

Some sites won't be any faster, but they are few and far between...

When I decided to get cable I looked at it as simple math. I was paying $16/month for my ISP and almost $20/month for an extra phone line, so for $4 extra I got a connection that was about 100x faster...

I pay 44.00 a month for RoadRunner I have never had Dial up but a friend of mine does,I worked on her comp. one day and had to get drivers I mean I sat there for over an hour waiting for this to happen, finally I got tired of waiting drove home D/L drivers to mine Burned to cd and drove back to her house and it was still D/L the drivers.Needless to say I stopped that and install from the CD.I would go nuts if i had to have dial up.I would rather not be on line.IMHO http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Hi hired/yoda,
Thanks for that.
I've checked into it a bit more.
There offering what they call a plug and go service.
They send the bits and you install it saves an engineer coming out.
The setup is a Usb ADSL modem and two filters.
The modem is an Alcatel speed touch ADSL modem, anyone heard of these.
Are they any good, been to there site. But can't find any reviews on them.
Thanks,
kfh.

Here are some reviews and more reviews
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Alcatel+speed+touch+ADSL+modem+reviews seems like there are some security holes in them
Just read a couple and from what i see not a good modem to have.

I wouldn't necessarily decide to not buy the service though...that's why they make firewalls and anti-virus software http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I would not either it does not mean that the service is bad,It is just that particular modem I'm sure you could ask them if they have an option on a different one? RR gives you a choice of 3 different modems If you explain the Reviews you have seen they might do something different but also remember that a review is just that It's just someones opinion and how much you trust it.Hiredgoonz is right about the firewalls and the AV.

Hi yoda/hired,
Interesting links, As you say its only a review.
As you probally know I run ZA Pro, Nav 2002.
And now Avg as recomended by most here, Hopefully they should cope with any breaches in security.
Thanks again,
kfh.

I think I'd research it a bit especially the speed part. Find out what they're claiming their speed is and then consider that's max. A good place for broadboand reports in the US in http://www.dslreports.com/ , I'm not familiar with a similiar site for your side of the pond. If you go over to this forum http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/ and ask about they'll probably steer you in the right direction for UK info.

Those speeds were taken with my other PC downloading a file at 58K (416k) 2 PCs sharing the bandwidth doesen't seem to make any difference in speed on either PC.

I used a 56K dial up for a year but got cable modem through Comcast in December. (I survived the Excite/ @Home demise with hardly a blip.) I do web site design on the side for my church & several ministries. Twice each Sunday I upload RealMedia sermon files that run between 4 & 5MB. With dialup it could take as much as 40 minutes for each, unless I got kicked off and had to start from scratch (NOTE: uploading is slower than downloads on most kinds of Internet connections.) One night in frustration I put the file to be uploaded onto a CD and drove to our church to use our cable modem connection. I timed the upload, it took 2 minutes 45 seconds! That sold me. I got the cable modem and have been delighted ever since. I think the extra cost is worth it for normal surfing and email - large attachments don't make me cringe anymore. Even the really long threads here load without a pause.

I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to go back to dialup again after just a test drive of broadband. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

He,he i agree whole heartedly!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I don't believe i even have a modem in my house in any system anymore! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Once you've gamed multi on broadband-there is no going back to dialup. Even the very few times i've had my service down ( never more than a couple of hours tops ) i never considerd installing/using/buying a dial up connection. I can wait. Besides, i waited for years thru 14/28/33/56 dialups-waiting for my Megabyte per sec connection is no problem.

DSL speeds depend allot on line quality and distance you live from the central switch board. Your speed also depends on the speed of the server that you are downloading from and how far away it is. You can only download as fast as the server can upload. I downloaded a file tonight and could only get 10.4KBps(83,200 bps) downloaded another file from a different site and could get 52KBps(416,000bps). The 10.4 KBps is twice as fast as 56k dialup(40,000-45,000bps
