I am having a hell of a time trying to use linux in my computer.Thought it was going to be easy switching. After countless problems i was able to have mandrake 8.1 up and running. But this system will not work with my pci pctel modem(something about being a winmodem)My board has a ISA slot available. There are instruction on the net to configure my modem with some drivers but is not as easy as with windows. Can anyone suggest any modem that may be quite easy to set using this mandrake linux?.I look at the sites on the net but for me to configure my modem i think you need to be a rocket scientist which I am not. any help will be appreciated

ISA modems are a bit hard to find nowadays, but if you look long enough you should be able to find them. Since ISA pre-dates all that Windows plug-n-play crap, they usually work with linux, unlike even many PCI hardware modems. For true multi-OS compatability, buy yourself an external serial modem. They cost twice as much and require a little configuration for either OS, but they work and are guaranteed to be fully hardware accelerated.

The best place to start looking for info would be linux support sites. I don't know any off-hand, does anyone else?

I was checking some pci modem with linux drivers at ebay. they are quite cheap. My question is HOW DIFFICULT IS TO SET THE DRIVERS?. In the case i have a disc or floppy with them do I have just to put it and follow instructions or do I have to go an input all that stuff about /dev/ and all that things?

More than likely it will be somewhere in between. Installation in linux isn't nearly as simple as when Windows pnp actually works, you will have to do some work, but it also won't be like spelunking in the registry.

I'm no linux expert myself, tho, let's see if someone who's actually used your linux version can answer that for ya.

Thanks for you help Saphalline!!! will wait to see if there are anyone with another idea. also will this be the same if I use and ISA modem or the os would recognize it without too much tweaking? the problem is that I know nothing about linux. Just was naive enough to buy all the propaganda about mandrake being a breeze to set

The not so cheap route would of course be an external modem...and Mandrake will pick that up automatically.

It should pick up a hardware internal automatically, especially if it is the jumpered variety.
