First let me point out that Asus does make good products-just that they've always been riddled with minor bugs that can give you headaches unless you're into constantly tweaking your system.
As for ECS-they are a division of PC Chips, who had a bad rep for some earlier products that were cheap to say the least. But, in the last couple of years i've personally used PC Chips and ECS boards with no unusual problems-and they've all held up just fine under constant use.
I personally have an ECS K7S5A board ( SIS735 )in my main system now-easy to set up, and performs flawlessly. I don't know how well the SIS745 chipset does ( K7S6A ).
If you seriously are considering a performance board, and are nervous about issues that may/may not exist-i'd recommend you getting an Abit or Epox board, as these vendors always produce a quality product i have yet to see anyone disparage.

If your over clocking then the Asus A7V333 is the way to go. It is the only board I've found to use the AthlonXP thermal pins design to monitor the cpu temp. Asus calls it COP. See http://www.asusemag.com.tw/tech/ch5/ch5-1.htm
The A7V333 also has the promise RAID controller as an option and IEEE 1394
(firewire) standard. CPU External Frequency Selection and core voltage can be set from BIOS.
In Tom's Hardware Guide Readers' Choice Awards 2001 Over 40% of Tom's readers consider Asus to be the best motherboard brand of all.See http://www4.tomshardware.com/column/02q1/020219/rc2001-04.html
The asus is what I plan to use
