Hey guys,
I seem to be stumpted when it comes to successfully configuring my linksys wireless G router with my cable modem Zyxel Prestige 900.
This modem has 5 outgoing lan ports.
I have previous experience setting up many encrypted wireless connections but cant seem to figure out why the linksys router does not seem to recognize the modem connection. I am constantly getting the error message : Unable to connect to internet in the linksys wireless setup (step 8). Ive checked and the wiring is correct...I know its probably a software config setup error but I normally dont need to mess with the static ip settings. Any idea/advice?
I would greatly appreciate any help you all can give.
(Normally I just use automatic DHCP settings and let linksys setup find everything.) Im assuming im running into problems because the modem has 5 ports? (normally the modems i setup have 1 outgoing and thats it.

Thanks everyone.

Plug the wire from the modem in to the WAN port on the router. It is probably separate from the other ports. Plug your machine in to one of the LAN ports. Then follow the instructions that came with the router.

Plug one of the cables from the modems LAN ports into the routers WAN port. Plug your machine in to one of the LAN ports on the router. Then follow the instructions that came with the router. You may need to run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew from a command line. You have to connect a PC to the new router to configure the wireless and any security settings.

If the modem has a 5 port switch built in, it probably is doing DHCP. You can leave the router WAN side as DHCP or use a static IP outside the DHCP range of the modem. Either way will work for normal outbound traffic. Depends on how tech savvy you are and what you intend to do on the LAN.
