Few months ago computer froze and stopped working, months prior I would be working and it would reboot.

When I noticed that it froze the fan stopped working, so I assumed it was a bad fan, I put in a new one today, came on but the monitor did not come on it showed a green light then it went to an amber light. Is my monitor bad, or the motherboard bad...? Thanks for any help.

HP Pavilian XT983 Windows XP operating System. Do you need anything else?

This here is a wild idea, but did you run the computer without the fan for a while? Is there a possibility that something inside is fried? Did you try the monitor on a different computer or a different monitor on your computer? I still say that something may have been overheated. It is a distinct possibility.

Try a different monitor to see if it is a monitor problem or a mainboard/graphics card issue.

I agree with PrntRhd. Check and see.

You might have dislodged the heatsink while you were mounting the new fan onto it; without adequate cooling, modern CPUs will overheat and shut down (or burn out) in a split second. Burning CPUs create quite a stink, you would've noticed if it actually burned out. Most likely it just cycles on and off in a split second. This is why your monitor initially shows green light (system running and about to POST), and then immediately goes amber (cpu detects that it's running hot and system goes OFF).

actually i think that u fried the psu, i have done that confirmed once and maybe twice. first time i think i didnt tighten the cables enouph. second time i put a high end gc in there that needed a better 12v rating then the cheap p.o.s i have right now. try hooking the moniter up to sumtin else. also smell for somthing burning and make sure that the wall votage is stable.
