Have a Socket 7 Biostar M5atc MB that has a Cyrix M II chip 266 or thereabouts, (piece of crap? or so I've heard). I read that I can upgrade to a K6-III 400. Two questions... Do I need to do anything else other than reset jumpers and replace the cpu. and will the performance be noticeably better? Thanks

For the first part.....maybe.....got the manual for the board? It should have the setup procedure, but generally resetting jumpers is about all you need to do. But you do need to make sure that the board supports the chip you want to use (generally voltage requirements).

Second part, yes you should see a noticeable performance increase...

I would also consider changing the entire mobo and probably other parts too! a K-III 400 is better than what you have but the software out there nowdays is very, very demanding. You could already build for cheap (very cheap) at least a 1Ghz system.

This (http://www.biostar.com.tw/products/mainboard/socket_7/m5atc/m_m5atc.exe) unzips your board manual in pdf form. I don't think it'll handle the k6-3.
