Newbie Laptop ? hibernation/standby

Not sure where this question should go...not a techie one. What is the difference between hibernation, and standby? Is hibernation when I leave the power on, and shut the lid? If I leave the lid "up" after a while the screen will go dark and the power button will glow orange...standby?? Thanx for any advice. Jim

Hibernation 'saves' the current system state and a 'dump' of the memory contents to a special folder on the hard drive, then it powers completely down, but with the OS in a state that it doesn't reboot.

Standby, just cuts power, but not to the processor or memory. RAM stays active.
