I am buying a 366 celeron emachine and would like to know if this can support a cdrw and what the limitations might be, for instance should I get nothing faster than 8x4x32 or perhaps even slower? Also what type of memory can this machine use? I know very little about all this but I am given to understand lots of ram is a good thing...I think this machine can take up to 256. Does it make a difference if you have one unit at 256 or say four at 64? I am most grateful for the generosity of the people who take the time to help those of us who know so little.
It is probalby going to have 2 slots for RAM...so in order to run it at its maximum of 256 you will need 2 128MB sticks of PC 100 (it should be SDRAM in there).
As to the CDRW, yes it will support one, and uf you get a unit with "Burn-Proof" or some other buffer under run protection you should be able to get one faster than 8x...

I was using a similar burner with an 8x cdrom on a 150mhz Pentium with only 24 megs of the old simm card type RAM. The only thing that I had to do was slow the burn speed down or I would get alot of half burned disks due to underrun buffering errors. As far as what burner to get, if you plan on upgrading later get the fastest one and just slow it down until you get another system.
I haven't tried it on the new pc yet but the rom is a 52x so it won't get behind, that's for sure. It should be able to write with the pedal to the metal as they say.
