im trying to install Windows XP Home so it can dual boot with my Me (ya need Me ya know :D ) and the setup starts going through, about 15-20 files dont install correctly, so im like "ok ill get the names and get them in the directory their needed in" so i start the setup for XP, and it says that the networking driver, Netshell.dll isnt working correctly, or couldnt be activated, something to that extent and then setup cancels out and reboots automatically. How can i overcome this??

Thanks again!:)

Have you checked to see if the hardware is actually XP compatible?

OK...then then next step...is the CD you are using actually functional.

There are certain setup steps that just can't be skipped. Certain files MUST be found/installed or the whole thing shuts down.

Isn't it best to copy the installation file set to Partition on the HDD and install from there?

I always do it from a partition other than C: [I use my last partition = G:], but Paul Komski said [something like] you can do it from C: and no need to keep the installation file set there permanently because XP automatically saves [a copy of] them there during the install.

I normally use the EBCD [fdisk.exe & format.com] to partition [FAT32] and format the HDD, then use the EBCD "File Manager" to copy the file set to a partition. The FAT32 partitions could be changed to NTFS after Windows is installed.
Post #4 on the EBCD thread gives an idea of how to do it.

This makes it easier to boot a chosen drive [particularly the one holding the EBCD].

This has a number of useful utilities included including "Image" [for DOS, by Terabyte] & "File Manager".

Is this problem showing late in the installation after setup restarts to "initialise" the hardware?
Could it be that WinXP doesn't include drivers for some items of hardware? [the NIC?]
In older Windows versions, when this happened, the installation would halt, the user had to switch off the PC and switch on again, and resume the installation, and Windows would skip the item of hardware and resume where it left off.
Does WinXP restart automatically in these circumstances I wonder? [and auto-skip the hardware item]
So long as it doesn't involve any vital hardware, you should be OK; you can go into "Device Manager" after Windows is installed, find all the items not working and then find and install the correct drivers.

Or else you could install Windows with minimal hardware connected, and add items of hardware one at a time later.

Ok so it got really annoying, so i Formatted my C: drive and booted up on the CD, and the CD works, as evident in my Toshiba, which im posting from now.

The Setup copies system files and what not and i get a BSOD when it tries to copy USBPORT.SYS i think, USBPORT.SYS will even freeze the setup while im selecting what drive to install it on.

Does the machine have the latest BIOS...something from around the time XP was released?

If not, you may want to try installing with ACPI support disabled...

Ohh... I hate BIOS flashes, if i can ill avoid those, i had a gateway, way better then the Compaq, and was shot in the head with a bad BIOS flash...
I will do it if I need to, but I would rather avoid it...
