Hello
Running WinXP with SP2 and OE6.
A week ago I removed Norton 2004 AV and Norton Firewall and installed aVast email protection and Zone Alarm firewall. Everything was OK until I ran the program Spybot which decided that it needed a newer version so I downloaded and installed that. The problem is that after reinstalling Spybot I have now got the Windows Security Alert icon in the system tray on boot up and it stays ther until shutdown, on examining this I find that the Windows Firewall has turned itself on and although I can click the box 'Don't allow exceptions' I can't turn the firewall off no matter how many times I try.
Can anyone help please to enable me to switch the Windows Firewall off.
Many thanks

Control panel > Administrative tools > services >

Scroll down to "Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing"

Double click it > click the "stop" button to stop the service if necessary > in the drop down box choose "disable" and hit apply.

It shouldn't bother you again. :)

If you don't want windows security center to bother you, it can be disabled the same way. Just remember Spybot may give you 3 or 4 flags that it is off when you run a scan. This is normal and not to worry.

BTW, don't mess with anything else in the services applet unless you know what you are doing. Turning off the wrong service can render windows unable to boot.

Many, Many thanks for this. I wouldn't have had a clue where to look. The 'Firewall' bos is now just showing the Zone Alarm Firewall.
Thanks again.
