Hey guys,

I just built a computer from scratch for the company I work for. It's got a Nvidia 680i motherboard, Intel D core 950 processor, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTS GPU. I installed Windows XP Professional and everything was going fine. Installed all the necessary drivers. Everything seems to be working fine.

Here's my problem, everytime I open an application, like internet explorer for example, the computer twitches. The mouse moves about 6 inches in a random direction and it seems that the computer skips a beat at that time. We also test games on this computer (at least, that was the plan) and when I start playing World of Warcraft, the computer goes all over the place. The mouse jumps every couple seconds and it's almost as if the computer is doing its own thing, at that point.

I've disabled all programs that don't need to be running. I'm not sure what else could be causing this. I started out easy and replaced the keyboard and mouse, and that didn't fix anything. I started disabling hardware, such as the floppy drive, cd-rom, and dvd-rom, and that didn't help either.

Anyone have any ideas on what this could possibly be?

I assume the new machine has the latest mobo drivers?

Download new mouse drivers first thing, may need to try the older versions if the new one doesn't fix it. I have seen this happen with an optical mouse and Windows standard drivers and also wireless mouse that was unuseable after about 30 seconds, the cursor just floated around. I assume you have tried different mouse pads as well. May want to also try setting the mouse speed down a bit. Disabling a CD ROM drive will usually not fix cursor problems but I there is nothing like being thorough.

The twitch thing is odd. You say the computer goes all over the place and I dont know what you mean. The mouse moves or the game image moves? If your computer is moving I would call an Exorcist. I doubt that is software related.

Yea...I installed the latest mouse drivers and that didn't do anything. When I use the word twitch.....I guess I mean that the computer literally has a twitch. Everything stop for a split second and the mouse cursor moves to a random area on the screen. I've monitored the CPU usage history and I don't see any spikes on there, that I can tell.

The game images really don't move, but like I said, the zoom in and zoom out on the character on the screen starts doing its own thing and the mouse cursor jumps all over the screen. One more thing that may help here.....the motherboard speaker beeps every once in a while when it twitches. I would say 1 in every 10 twitches.....it'll just beep once.

That sounds like exactly the problem. Good call on that one. Unfortunately, I have to be at CES this week and will not be able to try it until Friday, but I will repost with the outcome.

Thanks again.

I've seen this before. Usually what I did is use Norton Virus ( or any virus detection software) & detects any worm or trojans. Delete all that. Do the normal maintainance, defrag, clean up, & then restart. My friend call this 'situation' the drunken mouse act. I hope it solved yours.
