Something strange is happening with a friends computer.

I live in a house with a D-Link wireless/modem router connected to an adsl line.

There are 3 people wirelessly connected to the network
2 of the connections work perfectly
the third connection is strange: If you open internet explorer and type in a web page it refuses to connect. However if you open explorer and enter the exact ip address for a webpage (i used http://209.120.136.195/) the page loads ok. However the connection is very slow.

I shutdown/uninstalled every piece of firewall/anti-virus/spyware software i could find and turned off anything I deemed unnecessary but no change.

Can anyone suggest a solution, or even put their finger on the problem?

cheers

Rob

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif, richrobx!

What OS is installed on the problem computer? Does it load fine if you try using Firefox? What model of wireless router? Does the problem still happen if you use a wired connection? Did the computer ever connect properly?

If you can get to the page by entering the IP address, but not by typing in the name, then you have a DNS problem on that machine. Under the Properties for that connection is it set to "Obtain DNS server automatically"? Same for IP address (use DHCP)?

mjc - I checked the connection properties and DNS and DHCP are both set to automatic.

It's a new computer so this is the first time its tried to connect, however it has been connected to a different wireless network over Christmas, I don't know much about how this network was set up.

Running XP Home
Doesn't have Firefox
Router is Dlink G604T
I haven't tried a wired connection yet

cheers for the suggestions
