Thnx in advance for any suggestions.. Running two systems.. Win98
and Win2000 Pro.. Computers 10 feet apart with NIC cards and
ethernet cables.. Cable modem with fractional speed of 235kb. Mainly
want to share internet access without swapping cable at the modem.
Do not need to share files or printers at this time. Is it difficult to
set up a router to do this.. There could be a laptop in the future but
for now prefer to be wired...

Welcome to the http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

Yes a router is what you need. And yes it is pretty easy to setup. Most come with a setup disk that pretty much does all the work for you.

If you are planning on getting a laptop in there near future, go ahead and get a wireless router now so you will be all set for the laptop when you get it. They only cost a little more than plain wired routers, so it's well worth the extra to get it now. And you can go into the routers admin interface and turn off the wireless signal until you are ready to use it.

If/when you do want to share printers and/or files, a router will make it easy.

Linksys, D-link, and Netgear all have good routers. Linksys is favored the most be many of the members around here for networking components.
