backing up documents+settings

I'm working on a friends laptop. It wont boot and I'm pulling files off the hard drive manually with an external drive to usb converter. It's going great until I get to the \Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop directory. I'm assuming windows locks/encrypts these files somehow. How can I save these? I could get the password I'm sure if need be, but will that help at all? Thanks.

None of the other user accounts gave me any problems.

Do you get an error message? What OS? There are ways around it if he/she enabled file protection when the user account was set up. If the files are encrypted, then it is nearly impossible to do.

What's the boot problem?
