View Full Version : PC REALLY slow

Well, my PC has just started, for no apparent reason, running in slo-mo. Every app, the start-up time, even just typing this is slow and laggy. I've already defragged my hard drive, and performed virus and spyware checks, with CA and Spy Sweeper, respectively.

System specs are:

AMD 64 3000
1.25GB RAM
160GB HDD
X-Fi XtremeGamer
Nvidia 5700LE

Any suggestions? The only thing I've done out of the ordinary (that I can remember) is using Picasa2 for some photos.

Oh, one more thing. I had to change a file for my X-Fi, which I did here:

What Operating System are you using?

I would suggest running HiJackThis...the link is in my Signature.

Paste it here for the specialists to view and give advice. Be sure not to do anything without their lead...

I'm running Windows. And what would installing HiJack This do?

Well, my PC just blue screened.
Said something like this:
DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL

Please, please help!

Okay, one more thing. I went in to Battlefield 2142, my audio wasn't working. Checked the settings, tried turning on my X-Fi. It didn't work, because apparently my "hardware was incompatible," or something along those lines. Suggestions? Should I roll back the drivers?

Post the Hijackthis log so we can see what is running on the PC. Nothing else can be done for you until you follow the advice already given.

You actually are not installing HiJackThis...it is an executable and performs a scan...

It's amazing this system runs at all..... This is what doctors would call Munchausen by proxy... This is all self induced.

You have two active spyware scanners and two firewalls. That's like loading all of your friends into one car and letting two of them steer at the same time.

1) Uninstall Zone Alarm
2) Uninstall Spysweeper or Pest Patrol
3) Open Hijackthis and place a check next to any 018 entry that is for Logitech Desktop manager. Close all open program and browser windows except for Hijackthis and click fix checked.

Re-boot and post a fresh log and let us know how the system is running.

Okay, heres the new thing. One more thing: I took out the whole CA Suite; can I install the AV scanner and firewall? Thanks.

You still have both spy sweeper and Pest Patrol and you have not informed me if the system is running any differently....

themysteriousal
01-13-2007, 08:13 PM
Its running a bit faster, put I can't find Pest Patrol. I uninstalled the entire CA Suite, so that should've gotten rid of it.

themysteriousal
01-13-2007, 08:32 PM
Okay, scratch the bit faster. I can't run Battlefield 2142 without lag in the load-up video, which translates to impossibility playing the game itself. The thing is, the computer ran fine, even with Spy Sweeper, Pest Patrol, and 2 firewalls, which I've had for half a year. It just randomly started going slower a couple days ago, which is when I posted. And can you tell me what the DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL blue screen means?

mjc
01-13-2007, 08:54 PM
It can mean many things...including but not limited to driver problems, memory problems and actual hardware failure...

So, have you updated any drivers recently?

A run of Memtest86 (www.memtest86.com/) is probably a good idea...use the bootable CD ISO (or if you have a floppy drive, the boot disk is fine).

themysteriousal
01-14-2007, 01:55 AM
Well, the only new thing I installed, as stated before, was my X-Fi soundcard back around Christmas. I've heard Creative isn't great with their drivers, so I dunno...

mjc
01-14-2007, 03:34 AM
Which drivers did you use...the CD that came with the card?

Did you update them?

One thing that almost always needs to be done, especially, with Creative drivers, is to run the update for them. download from Creative...

themysteriousal
01-14-2007, 02:08 PM
I did run the update. However, I rolled back the drivers, and now my computer is running smoothly. But, do I still have pest patrol installed? the HiJackThis thing looks like Greek to me.

Open Hijackthis and place a check next to:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eTrustPPAP] "C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Internet Security Suite\eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware\PPActiveDetection.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTRegRun] C:\WINDOWS\CTRegRun.EXE

Close all open program and browser windows except for Hijackthis and click fix checked.

Re-boot and post fresh log.

For AV I recommend Avast Home Edition. (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) For a Firewall I recommend Kerio Personal Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
