I had a problem when I opened Ms Word and tried to print. When I would open a document and click on "Print", a message popped up saying that MS Word has encountered a problem and must close. It's always worked before, but all of a sudden the problem started. I un-installed and reinstalled Word, but that didn't correct the problem. After trying a lot of different things that didn't work, I figured that it must be something that I put on since the last time I used it. There was nothing I could think of other than the Windows updates. I then went into Control Panel and saw that on Dec. 16 there where four updates that I installed. So I un-installed them. That corrected the problem. So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had any problems with the updates. I also want to ask if anyone thinks it's possible that when I installed the updates that maybe they didn't install correctly and maybe I should just reinstall them again. Would appreciate your input. Thanks.

Re-install them ONE AT A TIME!. Re-boot and check printing after each one. By the way, do you have an HP all in one printer?
Yeah, but it may also be that due to the updates, you would need to update the printer drivers. I guess you can do each update individually to see which one it was that caused the problem

I should have mentioned that I have two printers. One is an HP inkjet--it's just a printer. MY other printer is a Konica/Minolta laser. Neither of the two printers would work which is the reason I didn't think it was a printer problem. I should have mentioned that in my original post but forgot.

What happens is there is a universal printer driver. Printers replace the universal driver with their driver. Windows may have altered the driver, hence it stops working with installed printers. I've see this kind of thing before.
Let's go through the process and see which hotfix is causing the problem

How do I download one at a time. When I go to Windows update, it will show four updates. Each one has a plus sigh next to it. If I click on the plus sign, it changes to a minus sign and give the details. Up at the top there's a place to download. It will down load an install all of them. Can I download one at a time? Or is there a way to download them but not install until I choose to install each one?

There should be a way to uncheck them. It will then ask if you want to be reminded of them in the future, say yes....

Here's what I did. I downloaded and installed all four of them and thought I would then remove them one at a time as suggested. After they were downloaded and installed, I restarted my computer. I them opened MS Word to see if I could print. To my surprise, it printed without any problem! So, I'm wondering if there was a problem with the installation of the ones I originally downloaded a couple of weeks ago:confused: . It's sure got me stumped. But I'm not going to worry about it as long as it's working. Thanks for your input!

Are you remembering to make Image backups as you move forward making software changes, so that if anything goes wrong you can at least [restore an image to] get back to a working software arrangement? :)

Yes, I usually do. As a matter-of-fact, I made an image before I installed the four updates. The problem is that the only place it caused a problem was in trying to print with MS Word and since I didn't use Word directly after I did the installs, I hadn't realized that there was a problem. Using Norton Ghost has been my salvation a couple of different times.
