IDE drive HELP

Hi I have an old Dell computer, it runs XP HOME with a P4 in it and I want to put another IDE HDD in it. It is a small 20gb drive from another older HP that ran Windows ME. I have the right cables at least i know that much I am almost 100 percent positive I deleted the whole drive's contents. Now when I plug the slave IDE connector into it and I try and boot the machine it says there is a failure and press ctrl-alt-delete. I have checked everything I can think of in the bios which isn't that much because it is a dell. This is not a big deal I jsut wanted to put all my music on the drive so i can network it to my 360 and run all the media through it, but if you know anything about the topic at hand please help. THX a lot you guys are the best.

Did you jumper the drive for it to be installed as a slave? And you may also have to jumper the original drive to allow it to have a slave.

Look at the top of the drives, there should be a diagram on each one showing how to correctly position the jumper for different situations.

You will need to st the jumpers on each drive...the one already in the Dell needs to be set to Master. The 'new' drive needs to be set to slave...

Ok, I did this and the computer has booted but I can not access the drive from anywhere. It's like it is not there

Can you access it to format using the Disk Management utility?

Right click on My Computer, choose Manage. Then the Disk Management utility. You should be able to see it there even if it isn't formatted or partitioned. If it pops up (make sure it isn't a drive with any data on it) right click on the drive and choose to partition as a new drive. Format and you are done.
